No Wrest for the wicked as ‘hobby band’ sell out several shows – The National

Image
AN unsigned “hobby band” have sold out three consecutive gigs follow-ing the release of their debut album in June. Now Edinburgh ’s Wrest are releasing Coward Of Us All on vinyl after sustained demand from fans of the band’s soaring indie-folk epics. Later this month the four- piece return to Glasgow for a concert supported by Stirling’s Robbie Hutton and local folk rockers These Wooden Bones. Don’t be tardy getting tickets – they’re about to sell out, says frontman Stewart Douglas. “To sell-out one show would have been incredible but it looks as if we’ll soon be on four in a row,” says Douglas. The perfectly pitched songwriter is still buzzing from just having played a solo show to a full house in Lerwick – 350 miles from home. During his trip north, Douglas was asked to stop by BBC Radio Shetland for a live performance and interview. No wonder folk are keen to chat: the self-funded record refines elements from the likes of The Twilight Sad, We Were Prom...

We Salute You, Founding Fathers of the NFL’s Analytics Movement – The Ringer

Image
The NFL is valuing youth and innovation more than ever before. A year after the Rams made Sean McVay the youngest head coach in league history, Patrick Mahomes became the youngest MVP winner since Dan Marino. This offseason, an avalanche followed: The Cardinals threw caution to the wind and paired Kliff Kingsbury with Kyler Murray, the Packers ended the Mike McCarthy era, and the Bengals poached the Rams’ quarterbacks coach to be their new head coach. When did the NFL begin to resemble Silicon Valley? Welcome to Wunderkind Week , where we’ll dive deep into how the NFL became a young man’s league. Brian Burke realized something was wrong when he noticed all of the commotion in the lobby of the Marriott Hotel in Karachi, Pakistan. It was September 2008, and almost 900 miles away, a dump truck carrying more than 1,300 pounds of explosives blew up at the entrance of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad. The terrorist attack left more than 50 dead, at least 260 wounded, and a crater 25 feet ...

Police Seek Man Seen Taking Upskirt Photos At McKinney Hobby Lobby – CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

Image
August 12, 2019 at 11:55 pm MCKINNEY, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) –  McKinney Police Detectives need help identifying a man who they say took upskirt photos of a 20-year-old woman inside a Hobby Lobby store. He was seen on surveillance video leaving the store at 3550 W. University Dr. around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 3. Officers responded to the location to investigate after Hannah Gigley told them the suspect had placed a cellphone under her daughter Alyssa’s skirt. Both women said he shot video or a photograph. “I’ve never been so mad at another human being in my life. He’s despicable,” said Hannah, who confronted the man and alerted security. “I went right up to him and said, ‘Excuse me sir we need to talk to you,’ ” Hannah said. “My daughter was standing next to me. He looked up and he started backing up and he saw the security guard and all of us standing there and he said, “I don’t like this” and he ran out the front door and I ran right after him.’ ” He fled the s...

Looking for a new hobby? How about trying square dancing – Standard-Times

Image
John Geen Promenade Squares Published 6:10 AM EDT Aug 13, 2019 At this time I would like to talk of a location in San Angelo. A little house by the river. There are no fancy signs or neon lights. It is a simple cinder block building at the end of a very short street and nestled in the bend of the quiet Concho River. If you have driven Veterans Memorial Drive you have seen the dancing silhouettes in green. That is the club house of the last remaining square dance group in San Angelo. There is a long and storied history of square dance in this city, but, I do not want to bore you with what is past. Today I wish to look with some optimism to the future. At this time each year the square dance community launches a recruiting effort to attract those seeking something different to do. A new social adventure. Yes, we wish to introduce more of you to the skill of square danci...

How hobbies benefit your productivity – Fast Company

By Aytekin Tank 5 minute Read Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon spends evenings with the turntables . Adena Friedman, CEO of Nasdaq , swears by Tae Kwon Do and told the BBC it serves as a great reminder that success is in her control. Though time is a more precious resource than ever, many of today’s successful business leaders are onto something—the importance of setting aside time for hobbies. For my part, as CEO of JotForm , I spend a few weeks every year olive picking on my family’s farm in Turkey. Afterward, I’m relaxed and refreshed, and I even have a few new ideas, ripe for exploring. It’s not easy to carve out time for the activities that we enjoy. There is a misconception that to succeed in the startup world, we need to be working nonstop . Phrases like “Good things come to those who hustle” dominate the conversation. At the same time, the prevalence of burnout in the workplace is at an all-time high,  which makes having a hobby outside of work all the more bene...

Local candlemaker turns hobby into business – Southwest Journal

Image
Uptown resident Emma Remer finds secondhand containers for all of her hand-poured candles. She recently began selling her wares at the Linden Hills Farmers Market. Photos by Andrew Hazzard A couple of winters ago, Emma Remer found herself short on cash as the holiday season approached, so she got creative. That year, her friends and family received homemade candles, and they gave Remer some insightful feedback: These are pretty good. Remer, who lives in Uptown, took that advice to heart and launched her own brand, Burn Boss. Now she sells the candles on consignment to Carousel and Folk in Standish and Polka Dot in St. Paul. In July, she started selling her wares at the Linden Hills Farmers Market. Burn Boss specializes in soy and coconut wax candles. Those materials have a lower melting point than kerosene and burn cleaner, she said. Both have distinct fragrances as well. But what makes Burn Boss unique is the containers, all of which are reused vessels Remer tracks down at fl...

As the pigeons fly: Local resident enjoys hobby of raising Racing Homer pigeons – Bluff Country Newspaper Group

Image
Birds of a feather race home together. That’s the case for about 30 Racing Homer pigeons residing at Virginia Karlsbroten’s farm just over the Iowa state line on Locust Road.  “I enjoy working with animals and just seeing how far they can fly,” she said. “Sometimes they amaze you.” Karlsbroten and her husband, Dennis, have been raising the birds seriously for about three years now. They had some years and years ago, but weren’t too serious about it.  The two breeds of pigeons – Racing Homer and Norwich Croppers – now have their own coop and are trained by Karlsbroten to fly home from wherever she releases them. The croppers don’t fly, as they are poor flyers, she said. The distance training is Karlsbroten’s part. When she trains young birds, she lets them free fly around the farm to get their bearings.  Eventually, she’ll take them about five miles away from the farm and let them fly home. Then she’ll increase the distance to 10, 15 and 30 miles. “It’s fun to watch them,” sh...

How To Turn A Hobby Into A Lucrative Business – Forbes

Image
Pedego Store owner Kathy Puryear and husband Bill enjoy biking together. Annie Marum Kathy Puryear, 62, was an elementary school teacher for 30 years. Upon retiring in 2014, she knew she was too young to retire fully and started looking for her second act. She briefly fantasized about becoming a florist at a Safeway but realized she wanted to do something that let her be outside sharing happiness with others. However, what to do? Kathy decided that the summer of 2014 was the “summer of yes!” On a trip to the central coast of California, Kathy and her husband Bill rented Pedego electric bikes and fell in love with them. They liked the bikes so much that a few weeks later they rented them again at the Pedego Coronado store in San Diego. They bought their first Pedego bikes that summer, and she rode 500 miles in the first few months, in the Scottsdale heat. The experience changed her life. It also motivated her to change other lives with the power of cycling. So they called Pedego...
